3 World Tour moments that stand out for Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig

Last Sunday, Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig was confirmed as the winner of the UCI World Tour youth ranking. The Danish national time trial champion has enjoyed an incredible year in her debut season with Cervélo Bigla Pro Cycling Team.

Her year includes two individual victories, one national title as well as top ten placings in the World Tour - something she didn’t expect this soon in her young career. Below, she shares her best moments from the World Tour series.

I remember Strade Bianche because when we finished I couldn’t believe I was in the top 10 in my first World Tour race. Then the organisation called me to tell me I need to go to the podium as the best young rider. I told them no they’re making a mistake, it can’t be me.
I remember I cried like a baby on the podium and one of the more experienced riders who is used to the podium looked at me like something was wrong with me.

At first, I tried to not focus on the jersey too much. We stayed focused on the team goals and as the races progressed we started thinking more about the jersey. The team is a base for young talented riders and we want to attract more young riders. We want to showcase how young riders are developed here so the jersey is a perfect advert for that.

I have three stand out moments from the World Tour.

Trofeo Alfredo Binda

To finish on the podium in a World Tour race was unbelievable for me and I still don’t think I’ve realised what that means. The team rode so well that day and it’s a moment I will remember for a long time.

Gent Wevelgem

It was another amazing team performance. We suffered as a team. It was such a tough race and I remember I couldn’t stand on my legs after the finish. We were so happy because, in the end, we sacrificed so much to get Lotta to the finish. That was our goal and we all gave 100%. The climbs finished with 40km to go and then there was attack after attack. It was relentless. We had to cover all the attacks. I think we may have been the only team to have 5 riders in the final so that says something about the team performance that day. We fought as a unit and in the end, it felt so great when Lotta won because it felt like a team victory. We knew we just had to get her to the line and she would do the rest.

La Flèche Wallonne

Allie was in the breakaway for a long time from the beginning. Before getting to the Mur de Huy, Ashleigh made her move on one of the earlier climbs to bridge to Allie. But even before then, Ashleigh had crashed and Clara totally sacrificed to bring Ashleigh back. When the peloton caught Ashleigh, Marie then attacked. Even though we didn’t win or get the result we wanted, it feels so much better when you unite and fight as a team. No one could take that away from us. That was another special World Tour performance and is one of the memories that ranks highly for me this season.
