Bigla takes impressive victory in Berner Rundfahrt
The Bigla Pro Cycling Team put on a fine performance during the Berner Rundfahrt in Switzerland on Saturday. Doris Schweizer and Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio put the pressure on early, which resulted in the two girls leading the race for the majority of the day.
Local girl Schweizer would end up the victor with Moolman-Pasio coming home in second. The race consisted of a lap circuit and included a 3-kilometre climb. The climb would have an effect early in the race when Schweizer, Moolman-Pasio and three others slipped off the front. Eventually the pressure was too much and only the BPCT girls could hold the pace.
With 60 kilometres to go, their gap had gone up to 2 minutes and 15 seconds. The peloton worked together fiercely to reduce the advantage but their work was in vain as the gap eventually increased to 5 minutes in the closing kilometres of the race.
Lotta Lepistö made it a clean sweep for the team as she won the bunch sprint for third followed by Lisa Klein in fourth.
We had a good plan today and it worked well on the first climb. Ashleigh and I went away and we did a team time trial for 95 kilometres. It wasn’t easy but it wasn’t too hard. I live close to here and I train on these roads so I am happy to win. I’ve been second here twice so it’s nice to finally get the win. When we went away we had to keep a really fast pace. In the middle we took it a little easy to assess the situation but later in the final we had to put the pressure on again.
Thomas Campana – General Manager
We just did our duty today. It was easy but the easy races are the difficult ones to win in cycling. It’s a hard course and from that perspective we could make the split from the beginning. Doris and Ashleigh did a really good job to be away from the start. The second half of the course it was really windy so they had to stay focused and put a good effort in. Usually in Switzerland the racing isn’t this aggressive so we came here with a plan and we are very happy that it worked out.
