Former Olympic canoer, Elise Chabbey joins Cervélo Bigla
Elise Chabbey will ride for the Cervélo Bigla Pro Cycling Team in 2019. The Swiss rider is relatively new to cycling but comes from a high-performance sports background.
She represented Switzerland in the 2012 Olympic games as a canoer.
“I started cycling only two years ago so I think it’s an amazing opportunity to join Cervélo Bigla already. The team has so many good riders and I think I will progress here in this professional environment they’ve built,” Chabbey said.
Chabbey says she is happy with her progression in the sport and feels the transition to cycling is a successful one. This year she’s won two Swiss cup races and managed to stay with the front group in Emakumeen Bira and Tour de l’Ardèche.
“I like these kinds of stories,” team manager, Thomas Campana said. “She’s a proven Olympian in a completely different sport. In the past, I’ve been lucky enough to have rowers and athletes who worked with the upper body before turning to cycling because they are well-balanced athletes. Elise is a big talent coming from canoeing and extreme running. She reminds me a bit of Emma Pooley. We saw her in Bira where she did really good ride for someone who hasn’t been riding consistently in the World Tour. In La Course, she was not happy with her performance but for me, it was a great result. She’s Swiss and we’re a Swiss-based team and I think she will have a great future with us. After becoming a doctor in June next year, she will focus full time on cycling.”
Chabbey says she wants to keep progressing to the level of winning a big race one day. “But first I want to do a good job for the team. I’m still a beginner in cycling, I have a lot to learn with regards to how to be in a group and how to work in a team. This is the perfect team for a rider looking to develop and better themselves.”
