Hanselmann ends successful national championships with second medal

Nicole Hanselmann wrapped up a successful Swiss national championship with a second successive medal. After winning the individual time trial, Hanselmann picked up the bronze medal in the road race on Sunday.

Hanselmann lined up in the race as an individual, which was always going to make her task difficult.

“Today’s race was just about gambling,” she said. “I’m happy I could get another medal, especially after winning the ITT title. I knew before the race that it would be difficult to beat two mountain bike world champions.”

“The racing had an unmotivated style to it. I was hoping for a fast and hard race but it was just not tough enough. There was an early attack by three girls. No one wanted to take the responsibility of chasing and I was hoping on the climbs that something would happen but even the dropped riders returned. In the end, there were 7 of us left in the last 10 kilometres. After Jolanda Neff attacked, I tried to close the gap but everyone responded to me so I decided to not do all the work and save energy for the sprint. Overall, I leave the championships with two medals so I have to be satisfied with that. I’m looking forward to helping the team with my form over the next part of the calendar.”

The result means the Cervélo Bigla Pro Cycling Team wraps up the championships with a total of 7 medals, 5 of them gold.

The team will now turn its attention to one of the most prestigious races on the calendar, the Giro Rosa which starts with a team time trial on Friday.
