Klein sprints to second in Healthy Ageing Tour
Lisa Klein continued her impressive start to the season by finishing second on stage 3 of the Healthy Ageing Tour. The result means the 20-year-old retains the lead in the young rider jersey and remains fourth in the overall classification.
The race came down to a reduced bunch sprint after a committed chase of the breakaway by the peloton. The 154,4km stage saw the peloton allow a group of three to slip off the front, Stephanie Pohl representing the team in the move, allowing the pressure off Klein, Lotta Lepistö and Allie Dragoo. The three Cervélo Bigla riders were seen always paying close attention to the front of the peloton as the breakaway eventually grew to 10 riders.
In a fightback, the peloton closed the final escapee with 3 kilometres to go ensuring a bunch sprint. Lisa Brennauer (Canyon SRAM) won ahead of Klein.
"It was a good day in general," Klein said. "We were always in the front together with Lotta [Lepistö]. In the last lap, everything came back together and it was hectic. Lotta made it clear that I should go for the sprint. I took the last corner 3rd, on Brennauer's wheel. With my instincts I started to sprint out of her wheel and maybe it was a bit too early but it was my first sprint. I was nervous but I am happy with the result. It was great team work and I am happy the team gave me this opportunity."
The race continues on Saturday with a 126km road stage. The course is made of up a circuit that will be raced 4 times.
