Lotta Lepistö claims podium spot in Giro Rosa stage 4
Lotta Lepistö sprinted to third during Monday’s fourth stage of the Giro Rosa. Lepistö says just finishing on the podium is like a victory after chasing back following a late crash in the stage.
The day’s last attacker was caught with 9 kilometres to go, setting up the stage for a sprint. The pace was extremely high as the peloton organised itself when a crash occurred and a large part of the peloton went down.
“It was a hectic final,” Lepistö said. “My first instinct at the crash was to make sure Ashleigh [Moolman-Pasio] was ok and get her to the front. When we caught the peloton, I went right to the front to fight for position. I told myself the podium was the minimum for me today, so the adrenaline was pumping from the chase. I was a bit in the wind on the wrong side in the sprint but at the end of the day, I was just happy to contest the sprint. It was almost like a victory, just finishing on the podium after that final.”
The stage started and finished in Piacenza and featured one category three climb at the halfway point. With the climb coming far from the finish, it offered riders the chance to make it back and set the stage for a sprint.
Stage 5 will see another sprint-friendly stage before the race heads into the challenging mountains from stage 6.
