The first UCI WorldTour event got underway in Italy on Saturday. Strade Bianche took place in cold and rainy conditions which made for a race of attrition. Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio led the team home in eighth while Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig was tenth.

The two Cervélo Bigla formed part of a 20-rider chase group with 20 kilometres to go. With solo winner Anna van der Breggen opening her lead, Moolman-Pasio crashed inside the final 10 kilometres and had to fight her way back towards the front of the race.

“The team did a great job for the first two-thirds of the race and when things got going in the final, I was the only one in a position to go with the move. I had a bike change earlier and it cost me some energy. I was in a group to go for fourth place and then crashed in the last 10km’s which wasn’t ideal and it cost me the position of going for fourth,” Moolman-Pasio said.

“We’re a quality group and the team has so much potential. We need to be on the podium and learn how to execute at the highest level. We made some mistakes today and didn’t deliver so it’s bittersweet but we’re a young group and can only learn from it. We will take the lessons forward and deliver in the next races.”

The UCI Women's WorldTour continues on 11 March with Ronde van Drenthe.
