Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig and Leah Thomas animate the leading group at Setmana Ciclista Valenciana
Today marked the first stage of Setmana Ciclista Valenciana. The first section of the parcours was flat, with the latter third, however, containing two categorised climbs. Before the final 20km, Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig and Leah Thomas made it into a select group, which led the race as they took on the final climbs together. A few kilometres before the finish, Leah had to drop back, and was followed by Cecilie a little while later, after she unfortunately crashed on the descent. In the end, it came down to a sprint between the riders in the leading group. The two Bigla riders finished just outside the top 10, only a handful of seconds behind the leader.
Team Manager Thomas Campana said about today’s stage: “Our plan was to win the stage. After the descent, we brought Cecilie and Leah into the leading group. However, unfortunately we were not completely able to execute our plan, and with a few kilometres to the finish, Cecile crashed on the descent. However, both riders performed very well today, and the team is in good form.”
Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig, who was part of the leading group, was optimistic about the team’s form: “I think that this stage showed, that the team is strong. We had good tactics, which we executed, but we were unlucky in the end. On the climbs, we were quite strong, but I crashed on the final descent. However, that’s racing, and there are some things that you just can’t control. We’re looking forward to the next days of racing.”
