Lepistö Top Five in Drentse Acht van Westerveld

Finnish national champion Lotta Lepistö sprinted to fifth in Drentse Acht van Westerveld on Sunday. Following the previous day’s WorldTour race, Ronde van Drenthe, the race brings to a close a weekend of racing in Holland.

Sunday’s race was a tough one that eventually came down to a reduced bunch sprint. Lepistö was seen being very attentive to the front through the final hour of racing.

“I have mixed feelings from today,” she said. “There were plenty of attacks on the last circuit in the city. I knew from earlier years that a small group could get away so I had to cover every attack. I was feeling good for a podium but I went into the gutter on the sprint so lost some speed and got fifth. It’s not a bad result I think because I was pretty tired. I’m actually proud of myself because I was in every move in the final. It sucks that I wasn’t on the podium but I’m happy after the bad luck yesterday. I’m looking forward to the next WorldTour races.”

Lepistö and Lisa Klein both finished in the top 20 on Saturday’s Ronde van Drenthe. Team Manager, Thomas Campana commented on the events saying, “Lotta had a long season last year so there is no pressure from the team. She is a great talent and shows how good she is to always be up there fighting for the victory. Lisa will race only on the road this year and prepared really well over the winter for this season. It’s a really good result over a 150km race. Both Lotta and Lisa look great so we are looking forward to the next races ahead, we have a very good group.”

The team head to Italy for its next race in Trofeo Alfredo Binda on 19 March. The race is the next event in the UCI Women’s WorldTour.
