Lotta Lepistö: Vom DNF zum Weltmeisterschaftspodest

Lotta Lepistö: From DNF to World Championship Podium

Lotta Lepistö: Vom DNF zum Weltmeisterschaftspodest

Lotta Lepistö first signed onto the team as a trainee at the end of 2013 after Emil Zimmermann spotted her aggressive racing style in GP Cham- Hagendorn. Nicole Hanselmann won the race solo while Lepistö finished fourth.

Zimmermann saw in Lepistö what he describes as a “rough diamond.

“It was clear to me that I wanted this rider, Lotta Lepistö, in my team. I was convinced that this rough diamond would be a successful rider at the top level in the future. Her positive qualities include her dedication to top-class sport, on the bike, she’s a ‘sly fox’ and her sympathy and modest way in dealing with people,” Zimmermann said.

Following her bronze medal in the World Championships last weekend and asking her to reflect on her journey the past three years, she says, “Obviously I was not as good as now. I could win some kermises in Belgium where the level was not that high. I was struggling to finish UCI races. I had much more DNF’s in the races because I wasn’t in good shape.”
So how did she go from making up the numbers on the start line to one of the best sprinters in the world?

“One major thing is changing my coach and the team. The team has helped me a lot. Team Manager, Thomas [Campana] has been really supportive and really hard on me sometimes. It’s good because he is taking this project seriously. When he is hard with me, it’s hard for me to hear but I understand that the management just wants us to improve. He has our best interest and you can see everyone on the team always improving. That motivates us to keep going.”

Lepistö also mentioned the top level partners the team has attracted. “I love Cervélo, I think it’s a fast bike. The Endura kit is really fast and I love KASK, I think we have the coolest helmet in the peloton.”

With six victories to her name this year and numerous podium positions, Lepistö has extended her contract by two years as she believes the Cervélo Bigla Pro Cycling Team is the best environment to continue her development.
