Moolman-Pasio impressive in Auensteiner – Radsporttage opener
Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio continued her fine run of form on Saturday when she placed second during stage one of Auensteiner – Radsporttage. The South African attacked along with two other pre-race favourites, Lisa Brennauer (Canyon-SRAM) and Annemiek van Vleuten (Orica-AIS). The trio quickly built up a lead that saw them make it to the finish.
The opening stage was raced over 88 kilometres, a circuit race with 11 laps. The race started off with a fast pace that saw 30 riders lose contact with the peloton early on.
As the race approached the 30km to go mark, Moolman-Pasio and her fellow escapees made their move.
They quickly gained a 25 second advantage, it then grew to 48 seconds with an eventual advantage of 29 seconds when they crossed the line.
Team Manager, Thomas Campana said it was a good day for the team as Moolman-Pasio’s result was also followed up by Lotta Lepistö finishing fifth and getting the sprint jersey and the team leading the team classification.
“The racing is very hard here,” Campana said. “It’s not easy, positioning is important because there are short uphill’s followed by downhill’s and a lot of corners so the racing is fast because it’s important to be in the front. I think we were the best team today as we also lead the team classification and Lotta is in the sprint jersey.”
Tomorrow the race continues with a double-day. A 7,6km individual time trial will kick off the day’s proceedings followed by another road stage over 82 kilometres in the afternoon.
