Festival Elsy Jacobs: Moolman-Pasio top ten in the final stage
The Festival Elsy Jacobs stage race concluded in Luxembourg on Sunday with Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio finishing seventh on the stage. Carmen Small won the overall mountains classification after her heroics from the previous day.
Katarzyna Niewiadoma (Rabo-Liv) won the final stage and the overall, taking the race lead from Lotta Lepistö who started the stage with a one second advantage. Moolman-Pasio and Niewiadoma formed part of an 11-rider group that formed in the last 45 kilometres of the race. Niewiadoma would eventually attack with three laps to go and opened up a lead of over a minute.
“I was just following the moves,” Moolman-Pasio said at the end of the stage. “When I started this morning I wasn’t 100% and didn’t have enough to make the difference so I just had to play clever and follow. When Kasia went, I go boxed in and wanted to try to go with her.”
“I thought I would leave it for the others to chase because Greenedge had two riders there, Etixx also had two riders. I then sat on and they chased. On the first climb of the second last lap I went into difficulty. I came back and just survived. I wanted to give it a proper go in the sprint and I just chose the wrong line. I didn’t finish off the way I would have liked to but I dug deep and gave everything I could in the circumstance,” Moolman-Pasio said.
The former South African champion finished the race 4th overall. Lepistö led home what was left of the peloton and crossed the line in 11th place and 8th overall, making it two riders in the top ten of the final general classification results.
