First race of the season brings sixth place for Emma Norsgaard Jorgensen
Bigla-KATUSHA lined up today at our first race of the season, the Vuelta CV Feminas, which featured a relatively flat 98km-long route from Paterna to Valencia in the south of Spain. The race stayed largely together for most of the day. In the final 10km, a few riders escaped, however, they were reeled back in several kilometres later after the chase from the peloton, including several Bigla-KATUSHA riders at the front end of the main field. The race came down to a bunch sprint in Valencia, with Bastianelli taking the win, and Emma Norsgaard Jorgensen finishing the first race of the season in a strong sixth place.
Team Manager Thomas Campana explains: “We had high expectations for this race, and wanted to take the win. The team did a good job during the day, but unfortunately Kathrin Stirnemann, normally the last rider in the lead-out train for Emma, crashed around 30km ahead of the finish line. This was bad luck for the team. In the finale, Emma’s teammates brought her into position a bit too early, and so the timing of her sprint was not ideal. However, sixth place is a good result, particularly when one considers that Emma was away from racing for almost a year due to injury. It’s a good start to the season, and we’re looking forward to seeing what the team can do next week.”
