Giro Rosa: Moolman-Pasio Maintain Third Overall
Stage 3 of the Giro Rosa turned out to be another tough day for the peloton in extreme heat conditions. The majority of the stage was held in temperatures around 36 degrees Celsius and with the average speed above 40 km/h it turned out to be a tough day for the peloton.
A breakaway of nine riders survived an attack midway through the stage and finished 1 minute and 15 seconds ahead of the peloton. Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio maintained third in the overall classification after finishing fifteenth on the stage, safely in the bunch.
Lucinda Brand (Rabo-Liv) won the stage ahead of Valentina Scandolara (Orica-AIS) and Elena Cecchini (Lotto Soudal). The break of nine got a maximum advantage of over five minutes. Boels-Dolmans leading the race with the maglia rosa took it upon themselves to chase. They were later joined by Bigla Pro Cycling Team and Velocio-SRAM.
The cohesion in the chase reduced the gap and had no changes to the top 3 in the overall classification.
Thomas Campana – Team Manager
Today was a typical flat stage in the Giro that turns out to be hilly. It was hectic. I’m very excited about how the team has handled itself. Especially after stage races Bira and the Women’s Tour. There’s a lot of discipline and interaction between the riders and so far we’re happy with how things have gone in the race. Today, strategy played a major role and the team did their job perfectly.
