Giro Rosa: Moolman-Pasio Third on Stage 6
Stage 6 of the Giro Rosa was again a big test for the race favourites with three mountains to be contested. Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio impressed again to finish third on the stage.
With the favourites watching each other, Mayuko Hagiwara (Wiggle-Honda) spotted an opportunity and rode away on the final climb. She got a gap of closed to three minutes and held a 24 second advantage crossing the line.
Race leader Megan Guarnier (Boels-Dolmans) led the group home ahead of Moolman-Pasio.
“It was a tough stage. The team was really incredible to do the job that they were given. I was really well supported,” Moolman-Pasio said at the finish.
There was a nervous moment for the other race favourites as she attacked on the descent of the second climb. Together with Elisa Longo Borghini they joined the early attack of the day which contained Sharon Laws.
The gap rose close to a minute at one point but Boels-Dolmans and Rabo-Liv worked together to bring it back having missed the move.
“There was appoint halfway through the race I really thought I had it because Elisa and I got away on the descent of the second climb and we joined the breakaway group. We had 58 seconds at one stage and we really did our best to maintain that gap but as we hit the last climb we were joined by the pink jersey group. I put in an attack or two up the climb but didn’t get away,” Moolman-Pasio said.
She retains third place overall 14 seconds behind the race leader. Tomorrow sees another climbing stage followed by the time trial then the final stage which is another mountaintop finish.
