Giro Rosa: Stage 4 Ends In Bunch Sprint
Stage 4 of the Giro Rosa ended in a bunch sprint. Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio rolled safely across the line in eleventh to maintain third place in the overall classification. Annalisa Cucinotta (Ale-Cipollini) won the stage ahead of Marta Bastianelli (Aromitalia-Vaiano) and Elena Cecchini (Lotto-Soudal).
The race started in Pioltello. A fast start and technical 11 kilometre circuit caused early splits in the race. “Today was crazy,” Annemiek van Vleuten said at the end of the stage. “The start was unbelievable with the speed and crashes everywhere. It was a proper Italian criterium.”
Lizzie Williams (Orica-AIS) and Mieke Kroger (Velocio-SRAM) were the first to attack. They were joined by Valentina Bastianelli (Inpa Sottoli) and Silvia Valsecchi (Bepink Laclassica). The four riders gained a lead of over 2 minutes until Ale-Cipollini and Wiggle-Honda took it upon themselves to bring it back. The group was reeled in with 26 kilometres to go and the scene was set for a sprint.
“It was important to stay out of trouble and be in the front and we got through the stage without any problems so that’s good,” van Vleuten concluded.
Stage 5 will see the first mountain to finish of the race as it makes its way to Aprica. The stage will be contested over 126 kilometres.
