Lepistö and Norsgaard Jørgensen go 1-2 in Toscana opener
The Cervélo Bigla Pro Cycling Team got the Giro della Toscana off to a brilliant start with Lotta Lepistö winning the prologue. The Finnish champion rode the 2.2 kilometre course in 2 minutes 56 seconds. Teammate Emma Norsgaard Jørgensen was second, only one second adrift.
This is the fourth year in a row the team has won the prologue of the Italian race. Clara Koppenburg finished fifth to make it a complete team performance. The race took place in Campi Bisenzio.
“It’s nice to win,” Lepistö said after the podium celebrations. “It was a tight race of seconds so I’m happy that we could be first and second. There was a lot of details to remember today. It was important to get off to a good start and keep the speed up. I’m pretty good in the corners so that helped me save time too. I didn’t do the perfect lines but it was good enough for the win. I had some power today and it’s nice to get a win after a bit of a racing break. I’m ready for this weekend with the girls and give them the full support.”
19 year old Norsgaard Jørgensen was naturally delighted with her result. “It was great day today. Lotta took my hot seat but at least it was her so I’m super happy. The course was very short and good for me because there were two climbs but they came on corners so in the end the course was in my favour. This result is definitely a confidence boost for a young rider like me.”
The race continues with the first road stage on Saturday. The stage will start and finish in Segromigno in Piano and will be 133,6 kilometres long. Two category two climbs will feature inside the final 30 kilometres and is likely to have an outcome on the result.
