Lepisto Fifth As Break Survives Stage 2 In Thüringen Rundfahrt

Lotta Lepistö continued a good start to Internationale Thüringen Rundfahrt der Frauen by placing fifth on the stage after a breakaway survived the day. The peloton was unable to catch the early escapees and Eugenia Bujak (BTC City Ljubljana) took the stage honours.

Lepistö lead the peloton home fourteen seconds later. The team suffered some bad luck as Joëlle Numainville was part of the breakaway of 7 riders but with 25 kilometres to go, suffered a mechanical and returned to the peloton. Carmen Small also crashed in the final. The American finished the stage but has been taken to the hospital for observation.

“Today was not a good day for us but that’s cycling,” Lepistö said. “Some days you win other day you lose. We had a really good situation until Joëlle had some bad luck. We’re very confident she had a good chance to win from the break or if it came back we had a good chance in the sprint.”

The final was contested in rainy weather which made the parcours slippery. An update on Small’s injuries will be released in due course. Tomorrow the peloton will face a double day with a time trial in the morning and a road race in the afternoon.
