Lepistö on the podium in Sweden for the third year in a row
Lotta Lepistö sprinted to third during Monday’s Postnord Vårgårda West Sweden road race. It’s the third year in a row Lepistö is on the podium after winning last year and placing second in 2016.
“I like this race,” she said after the podium presentations. “It’s one of my favourite races on the calendar. I think it’s because it’s so close to home. We had some fun today and everyone on the team was part of it.”
Today’s proceedings were made up of several attacks in an aggressive showing from the peloton. Eventually though, the final result came down to a bunch sprint.
“There were so many attacks today and we were represented all the time. Everyone gave their all. There was a split at one stage and I was a little back and Emma [Norsgaard Jørgensen] came from behind and brought me back,” Lepistö continued.
“They were trying to make the race hard. There is always a chance of a breakaway winning here so the peloton made the racing hard. Everyone knows there’s a big chance and I think that’s why there were so many attacks because there is everything in the race, there is gravel, cornering, a bit of climbing so there’s something for everyone.”
“We knew there would be fireworks on the last laps and Cille [Uttrup Ludwig] and Ashleigh [Moolman-Pasio] did an amazing job. It was a hectic sprint and I had to take some risks to get another podium in the last 300 metres. I knew I can handle the bike pretty well. It’s not a win but I am happy.”
The Cervélo Bigla Pro Cycling Team will now turn its attention to the Ladies Tour of Norway team time trial on Thursday. Last Saturday the team raced the discipline in Sweden and placed third.
