Lizzy Banks looks towards next season
Lizzy Banks had a very successful first year with Bigla in 2019, having taken twenty top 10 results in one-day races, stage races and general classification rankings, as well as an unforgettable victory on Stage 8 of the Giro Rosa.
After such a strong season, she tells us how she’s going about setting aims for next year.
“Making goals for 2020 is actually more challenging than I thought it would be, because my 2019 season was quite successful compared to how I thought it would be. My progress was more accelerated than I had expected, and I could never have dreamed of winning a stage of the Giro Rosa or getting that many top 10 results in big races in my first season in Europe. I’m thrilled coming off the back of those results. But then when you’re setting your goals for 2020, this makes you take a step back and actually realise how far you’ve come."
"My goals for 2020 are lofty, you could say, and it won’t necessarily be easy to achieve them. However, I’ll of course as always try my best. The Women’s Tour and the Tour de Yorkshire are two big goals for me, being home races and two races that I really enjoyed last year due to their incredible atmosphere. I also had breakthrough performances in both races last year, and they mean a lot to me. So having good results there will be something that I’d like to target. Also, one of the biggest goals of next season will be trying to gain selection for the 2020 Olympic Games. It’s a huge ask, because there are not that many places but I’ll try my hardest and keep training over the winter, going into summer to be ready in late July. Another goal of mine is to make the podium in a Spring Classic. Of course, this will depend on the team’s aims and who will be the team leader at the races there. I also of course want to support my teammates and continue the role that I developed for myself last year, being a super domestique for my teammates. I really enjoyed that and that’s something which I look forward to heading into next year.”
