Lizzy Banks talks about her most memorable moments of 2019
We asked Lizzy Banks to tell us about her season highlights and why she'll remember them the most. Here’s what she had to say.
Tour de Yorkshire
Whatever the outcome, this was always going to be a special race for me, particularly with my husband watching and the start being so close to where I live. This was the first race where I had the confidence to say to the team what I wanted to achieve personally from the race. The team backed me 100% and I went out and made it onto the podium with the QOM jersey on the first day. This was also the first race some of my family had ever attended, so it was pretty special. To then back up that performance by taking a top 10 on the stage and in the GC on the second day, in atrocious conditions, was really unexpected and started to help me believe what was possible.
The Women's Tour
The whole week at The Women's Tour was also an amazing experience. Once again, I had family and friends coming to watch on four of the six stages. I have watched this race avidly since its inception, and I felt such privilege and pride to finally be racing it myself. To then be in a position along with Leah where we were both able to finish in the top 10 on GC, despite only finishing with 3 team members, was something I really could never have expected. I loved every second of that race and I desperately hope they will find a sponsor so that it continues for many years to come, because the cycling world would be poorer in many ways without it.
Stage 8 of the Giro Rosa
This moment barely needs an introduction but I will happily relive it! It was a stage that I started so completely exhausted and I was clinging for dear life at the back of the peloton. It’s a tale of what you can achieve with pure grit, determination, fight, an incredible teammate who you know unconditionally has your back, and the unrelenting motivation and guidance of your team director.

Lining up for the Yorkshire World Championships
Although the actual race didn't quite go my way, I was so grateful to be selected to support the British team in this race. It was a huge goal which I worked incredibly hard for. The feeling of standing on the podium at the start line and the reception of the crowd when Lizzie Deignan's name was called was a true once in a lifetime moment. It sent shivers all through my body and I think most of the team was close to tears!
A memorable moment with teammates
Finally, my moment of the year from the perspective of the team was pulling off Nikola Noskova's podium finish in Bologna. I have loved working with Nikola this year, and seeing the incredible growth and development of a teammate like her is a true privilege. Nikola is an incredible athlete who is only just scratching the surface of her potential. Being part of a team is about learning to trust and have confidence in one another and I feel like I have a really great bond with Nikola in this respect. The whole team worked hard for that result and I was so delighted to see her get the reward she deserved.
