Moolman-Pasio Continues Winning Streak in African Continental Championships
The early season on home soil continues to go according to plan for Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio who today won the gold medal in the African Continental Championships Individual Time Trial. On Monday she was part of the South African team who won the team time trial. Today's result secured her second gold medal from the competition so far.
Last week she also successfully defended her titles to win both the road race and the individual time trial at the South African National Championships.
Today’s event was held over 23 kilometres and as the defending champion, she was the last rider to leave the start house and finished in a time of 38’19”.
Being the defending champion I really wanted to defend my title again. From the team time trial I realised that I’m feeling strong so coming in I felt confident. It was a nice course that suited me well. I didn’t have the girls that were really my competition start close to me so it meant I couldn’t really chase anyone properly on the course. You never really know where you stand on the course especially as I didn’t have any time splits but I just kept going as hard as I could and was really happy to come through the finish line with a decent win.
We’re looking ahead to the road race on Friday too and there’s a great atmosphere in the South Africa camp. For the championships as a whole, it’s great to see that there’s more women racing so it’s obviously growing and it’s also good to see familiar faces from previous championships so the consistency is there too. JP van Zyl at the UCI World Cycling Centre in South Africa is doing a great job in hosting training camps for the women from the continent.
