Preview: Winston Salem Cycling Classic
Bigla Pro Cycling Team heads to the US this weekend and will start its campaign in Winston Salem Cycling Classic on Sunday, 31 May. Shelley Olds is the defending champion as she beat Joëlle Numainville to the line last year.
Olds and Numainville are now of course teammates and will both form part of the line up for the race. Olds has been training at home in Spain while Numainville left early for the US and has been at altitude in Colorado. The race takes place on a 12,7km circuit and the peloton will negotiate 8 laps. "I love America and the races there," Sports Director, Manel Lacambra said. "We have a good roster for the next 2 races in USA and we expect to be successful there. Last year Shelley won in Winston Salen and Joëlle was second. And in Philly both were in the 2nd place in the past years."
I am very happy and excited to race in America. Last year was very special for me in Winston-Salem and I met some great people who I have stayed in contact with. The course is challenging and the race promoter is one of the nicest people I have encountered in my years of racing. They really do a great job and we have just found out that our national Championships for 2016-2017 will be in Winston-Salem, so that makes it even more exciting racing there this weekend. I expect the racing to be very exciting this year, with the field growing and including more international professional teams. I am honored to be a part of the competition and so pleased to go to my country to race.
